A great list, with many titles I've yet to read.

Goddamnit, that BFI picture is mouth-watering, and Joseph's comments only further whet the appetite. On the day I win the lottery I'm buying the whole damn collection...and the Modern Classics series too. Though rather than Sarris, I'm a Kael guy. My copy of For Keeps is so curled up you can hardly believe it. I love, love The BFI series and dream in my heart of hearts of one day producing one of those little elegant volumes. Though I must say I don't much admire Paglia's essay on The Birds. I never could figure out what she meant when she claimed the jungle gym covered in birds was to her a symbol of modern twentieth century consciousness; why she loathed poor Veronica Cartwright's character so much who is, believe me, not the post fifties father-knows-best-princess peach she makes her out to be; or that business with Melanie Daniel's car...I think I spent half my time arguing with the book's seemingly blithe capriciousness. I really liked Kim Newman's book on Cat People (as well as his packed book of buffery Nightmare Movies) and the Richard Corliss one on Kubrick's Lolita. I would also add some of Larry McMurtry's and Graham Greene's criticism as well. And Gore Vidal's marvelous Screening History (or Myra Breckrinridge for that mattter) if I were to create my own personal list.

Thanks, Andre.
