I think the reference in Psych-Out is not "the airplane", but "The Airplane" as in the band Jefferson Airplane. Marty Balin's crew were the first San Francisco band to be signed by a major label.

Let's not forgot that other great time travel movie, Corman's The Undead. I mean, if I could travel back in time and hang out with Allison Hayes, Billy Barty, Dorothy Neumann, and Richard Devon in the form of "the devil," while watching a three-women dance troupe dressed like Vampira and listening to speeches written in iambic pentameter, all in a setting that's an abandoned supermarket filled with plastic trees and drenched by fog machines -- well, hey, I'm there!

oh my god, thanks for linking to that. you are right about the "beads" and thrift store sequences. I thought it was my imagination! I was glad to skip the thrift store montage, but the beads-acid-trip sequence is the best thing in the film.

The HBO VHS PsychOut is as complete as the 35mm version I saw, albeit pan-and-scan. I never saw the laserdisc. The Trip DVD is cut, too, but not as extensively. I contacted MGM about this, but they didn't give a shit.

The S.A. Clock theme to Psych Out ("The Pretty Song") is one of my most favoritist tracks ever recorded. But I've always been obsessively attracted to the image of what could have been, re: Flower Power.

the main theme might be okay, but man... though I don't like the PSych Out music either, and it's by the SAC. I guess I'm a tenderfoot in the area of "psych" music in the traditionalist sense. I don't even really like the Grateful Dead, even though I was on tour on and off all through 1987-9.

I had NO idea that DVD was heavily edited! What?!?!?! I will investigate immediately. THanks for pointing that out.

I didn't catch these on TCM. Do you know if these were the edited prints used for DVD, or the uncut versions? The DVD of Psych-Out was so badly trimmed that I can't bear to watch it.

Some of the instrumental music in The Trip was written by Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield and performed by The Electric Flag. Say what you will, but I think the main theme is excellent.
