LAST MISTRESS ALERT!

Not available on DVD because IFC is sometimes morons, buying the rights of independent films just to make sure no one ever gets to see them, Catherine Breillat's 2007 film, THE LAST MISTRESS, starring Asia Argento is playing on Sundance Channel tomorrow night at 1:30 AM.

There will probably be more showings on that channel (I already missed the first) but if you're an Asia Argento or Breillait fan, this is a tivomatic must. There's still a film missing from the Asia triple play of last year's Cannes, and I'm referring of course to the stripper tales movie made made Abel Ferrara. Keep watching the tivoplex!

Is IFC taking the Weinstein brothers playbook of keeping films on the shelf? I know that they kept The Good, the Bad and the Weird from being shown at the last Denver Film Festival for their own, secret reasons.

I remember writing a piece for popmatters about the Weinstein's bad handling of SHAOLIN SOCCER which they were going to run in the wake of the hype of Croucing Tiger, along with HERO, which was also postponed ad nauseum before it was released to become a hit.

Anyway some Weinstein rep actually wrote me and explained that they often shelf films until free publicity/trends roll favorably... like the star of this movie is about to come out with a better film wherein she might win an Oscar...

Anyway, that's the closest I could get from them as far as rationale... though it means they're often afraid to be the first one on the dance floor.

However I'm all for the Weinsteins since they put out that great Dragon Dynasty dvd label! And of course the Tarantino canon.
