The "teaser" poster for Cloverfield (bottom), following in the footsteps of The Day After Tomorrow (top), suggests that Ms. Liberty is now the unofficial poster girl for apocalyptic sci-fi.

Hey BLAD—
Great site. Have really been enjoying the broad coverage of movies old and new, lowbrow and highbrow. Re. Lady Liberty: actually, the poor lass has been getting batted around for years. You've inspired me to post a chronological set of images culled from pulps, comics and film over at my blog The Last Palace. Hope to have it up soon.
"Liberty Under Siege" is up at The Last Palace (http://lastpalace.blogspot.com/2008/01/liberty-under-siege.html).
True, Ms. Liberty's been besieged for quite awhile in cinema sci-fi (wasn't she half-buried in the sand in Planet of the Apes?). Now she's become a depressingly apt metaphor for contemporary America under Bushco. I mean, she's gone from half-buried to having her head been cut off for chrissakes. Talk about your apocalypse!
